OHS at St Georges Hall Liverpool 29th-30th April 2017
OHS was one of a group of approximately fifty groups invited to exhibit as part of The Merseyside Big History Weekend held in the elegance of the famous St Georges Hall, in Liverpool city centre.
The team from the Society set out to show Liverpool, and groups of visitors to the North West, the contribution made by Ormskirk and the surrounding districts in the development of life in the North West today.
Our display contributed to the main exhibition area where 50 plus groups displayed their work in researching, documenting and explaining many aspects of the history of our region.
Visitors to our stand were amazed to read the story of the first Veterinary Surgeon in the UK, William Moorcroft, who came from Ormskirk, and also the interest afforded to the work of the Society by the Lord.
Details of our varied programme for 2017- 2018 season were well received by the many visitors to our stand.
The weekend’s programme included a series of presentations covering a series of diverse topics including “Sixty Years of the Cavern” and “Liverpool: The Rise, Fall & Renaissance of a World Class City”.
The Great Hall was also the venue on Saturday for a short recital of Traditional Chinese Music by The Liverpool Chinese Youth Orchestra, and on Sunday we were entertained by the Pagoda Tai Chi Dance Group.
During the weekend we made contact with people from other historical groups and collected the details of a number of possible future speakers, and some interesting locations which could be of interest when planning future away day visits. There were a number of opportunities to promote our Society, with many people who were interested the regions local history, and some of our interesting facts on the history of Ormskirk.
Thanks to the efforts of our website contributors we have made contact with a group of enthusiasts from Skelmersdale and we were able to welcome in excess of 15 of our existing members to the event.
