Ken Pye: Prehistoric and Pagan Liverpool

Liverpool did not appear in the Doomsday book, and its postal address was at one time ‘near Ormskirk’. Mr Pye described fossilised remains from before the last ice age that were found in Stourton quarry.  He talked about the prehistoric forrests of Meols and the ancient port of Meols and its importance to both Roman and Viking invaders. The first inhabitants in the neolithic period were fishermen using coracles and hollowed out logs, and from 6500 years ago in the Croxteth area a collection of 530 flint tools have been uncovered and he referred to the prescence of Bears and Wolves inthe Childwall and West Derby areas.  The importance of Bidston Hill as a centre for Pagan worship and sacrifice as evidenced by rock carvings and the probability of Phoenician peoples inthe area searching for Bronze ingredients and Tin was descibed. THe Calderstones were in situ 1500years before Stonehenge and 2000 years before the Pyramids.  The Roman invasions of England after 3 attempts and the defences of the local  Brigantes and how Roman troops covered the NW of England followed by Anglo Saxon Jute and Viking invasions in the NW and the many Bloody battles which ensued and later the Norman conquest of the area This was followed by detail description of agriculural improvements and the building of the network of Liverpool streets and the influence of Rome on the form of worship.  Mr Pye’ written accounts are well worth reading and his radio presentations show his incredible comprehension of the Liverpool we know today and the scousers who reside there.
