The Danny

This talk was by Stewart Wood on 30th January 2017.
Stewart Wood and his team provided an excellent exhibition of materials together with an interesting presentation on the life of this unique vessel. This included a detailed scale model and a print of the ship at work on the Mersey during the 19th century.

The ship commissioned by the Manchester Ship Canal company and built on the Mersey, entered service as one of the new generation of powerful steam tugs ensuing the safe passage of shipping to the Manchester docks.

In its later years the tug was refitted to undertake a new role as the Canal Companies “Chairman’s Launch”. The refit undertaken by experts from the shipyards of The Clyde transformed the aging work boat into a luxury Art Deco “Mini Liner”.

The renamed vessel, ‘The Daniel Adamson’ was regularly used to convey VIP’s and Royalty .to observe the shipping operations of the river and ship canal.

After many years of faithful service the now derelict vessel was purchased by the founder members of the Trust for the sum £1.

The vessel saved at the eleventh hour from the breakers yard is now supported by local industry and a visionary group of volunteers, and The Danny is now embarking on a new life, preserved as a unique example of British engineering and STEAM technology
