Steven Spielerg’s film of Michael Mopurgo’s book and stage play “War Horse” featured an aspect of WW1 which had been largely forgotten. Considering the reliance of all sides in the conflict on horse transport and the British Government’s reported spending of £67.5 million on purchasing, training and delivering horses to the theatres of war, there has been little written about this topic and the Remount Depots. The speaker has researched the history of the Lathom Park Remount Depot , a huge tin city that housed more than 5000 horses and 2000 men at any one time and received and trained more than a quarter of a million horses. A fascinating and poignant story well worth hearing.
