It was around 1850 when over 160,000 people from the Lancashire area travelled to the New World. This was a Revolution as steam replaced sail. People from Europe came to Liverpool and travelled to the USA as part of the Cotton Trade.
The stories of 4 people were told, each with a different background and story. This gave us an idea not only of the variety of these people but also of their backgrounds.
The first was Maximillian Parker a Mormon who travelled long distances in USA. With his family he walked from Boston to Salt Lake City where he settled with his wife and had 13 children!
Next was John Hutchinson a Mill Owner from Bury who was in the Cotton Trade. He travelled widely in the USA on mail and steam ships.
The third was Ben Brierley a writer, poet and dialectician . This was something very different at that time. He sold his books to folks from Lancashire with stories from home.
The last was Thomas Moran from Bolton a well-known artist. His mother was a Hand Loom Weaver, and in the 1840’s depression sailed to Philadelphia which took 7 weeks. This was his first trip of many return journeys. In 1871 he visited the Grand Canyon on the Trans-Continental Railway where he painted many scenes of the magnificent scenery. He is still well known as an artist and a has paintings in Washington DC museum today.
A vote of thanks was given to Roger for a fascinating evening with much information and many questions answered.
