SKELMERSDALE – THE OLD NEW TOWN

SPEAKER – MARK BOARDMAN

Mark delivered a fascinating talk on the history of Skelmersdale from its beginning, right up to date.

Whilst most of the audience were aware of some of the background to Skelmersdale, it was evident that there were lots of details which were not well known!  The number of mines for one, along with the people and terrible conditions often lived in.

Several accidents and mine disasters were told in detail, and problems with landslides causing loss of life.  People had no choice but to leave and move to other parts of the country seeking work.

We were brought up to date with current developments, some of which have had to be postponed due to the current financial situation.   A town which was planned & designed for more than 80,000 inhabitants, was left with less than 40,000 living there.  Promises made were dreams and for the time at least, many remain unfinished which is a sad reflection on the development.

Mark answered questions from the audience regarding various landmarks and buildings.  He is well informed and a very clear speaker, answering all queries from research undertaken.

Mark was given a vote of thanks from Debbie Reardon our Librarian.
