Liverpool Dockland Carters

The talk was by Sharon Brown on 7th March 2016

Sharon’s lecture fitted in well coming after Ken Pye’s dockland talk because obviously goods had to be moved in and out of the docks.

Carters were very much family concerns but there were some really big operators. Many carters were of Irish descent and they had great respect for their beasts and were proud of their jobs. Sharon described the working day from early morning feeding to late evening bedding down, plus a lunch time nose bag. She related amusing stories about dockland in the scouse manner.

As motor transport developed many carters became drivers but kept an affinity for their equine partners. After World War 2 hundreds of twin axle carts were sold and a farmer in Bickerstaffe put draw-bars on them and USAF wheels and some are still in use today for farming work.
