Overhead Railway

A talk by Michael Murphy.

On Monday 5th March, we were able to share memories, historical maps and pictures of the Overhead Railway – locally known as the ‘Dockers Umbrella’ which operated from 1893 up until 1956.
Michael Murphy detailed the full history of this railway, from the planning stages to the final days of its workings. Our members were very interested and entertained by the detailed history and of people who travelled at that time. We learnt of the influential people, finances and companies who were involved in the building and running of the railway and how it came to a sad end.
Michael is a well-researched and knowledgeable speaker who shared his own experiences with humour. The meeting concluded with some questions, memories and a vote of thanks from members.
