The American Civil War

ORMSKIRK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

7 NOVEMBER 2022

The American Civil War – Speaker David Hearn

The meeting was well attended and members enjoyed a most interesting and informative talk.  David who has been to our Society in the past is a well-researched and well-known public speaker, has broadcast on radio and television and appeared on Channel 5.

Many of the audience were surprised to hear of the large number of merchants from Liverpool and surrounding areas, who were involved in the Slave Trade in the 1600’s until 1807 when slavery was abolished.

The large numbers of Slave Ships at that time were astounding and we learnt that ‘one and a half million men, women and children were carried on Liverpool ships from their homes in Africa to lives of toil and misery in the Americas’.

It was surprising to learn also that so many of these merchants who earned such large amounts of money from their trading, lived, and owned many of the streets we know so well.

Streets in Liverpool were named after many of them, as were well-known buildings.  David has written a book “The Slave Streets of Liverpool” which I am finding very interesting at the moment!

David has written many books and you may want to look on his website for details see ‘The Dusty Teapot Company CIC’ or search for David Hearn

A vote of thanks was given by Pam Nanson our secretary.
