Visit to Allerton Castle – 29 April 2014

Allerton Castle visit.

WOW!! What a day!!  Thirty two members left Ormskirk at 9.30am to visit Allerton Castle, near Knaresborough in Yorkshire, a Grade 1 listed building, It is one of the grandest surviving elegant Gothic stately homes, which has been restored after a serious fire.  It is a magnificent building steeped in history and furnished with superb and unusual antiques.

En route we stopped at the Spread Eagle at Sawley for very tasty bacon baps and coffee and arrived at Allerton Castle at 1.30pm for our tour.

We were very excited as one of the guides was Dr Gerald Rolph, the American owner who lives in the castle.  The tour was both very educational and interesting and the beautifully served tea and biscuits in the ballroom were very welcome.

On the way back to the Spread Eagle for dinner the coach was “buzzing” with chatter of Gerald Rolph and the treasures we had seen

We had a delicious dinner and returned home about 9.30pm – exhausted – but very happy as we had all enjoyed our day immensely.
