This talk was by Charlie Withal on 21st November 2016.
This was most interesting and informative, covering the history and changes in the relationship between countries, especially in view of recent developments in the USA.
The ‘Pendulum Swings’ was a phrase Charlie used several times, in order to describe the changes between the two countries over the years.
He started his talk in the 1940’s and 50’s covering the special relationship between Britain and the USA as it developed through the Suez problem and to changes in NATO, defence, economics and politics.
We progressed through various politicians over the following years, Wilson & Heath, Regan & Thatcher, Blair & Major, Clinton & Bush. We were reminded of incidents of wars, weapons and power as situations changed throughout the world. Friendships and disagreements swung to and fro on both sides as world situations changed as, we lead up to the present day with Obama and Cameron involving the Middle East and ‘drone wars’.
Bringing us right up to date, it was outlined how uncertain the future is with Trump & Farage (?) and the question was put of how was this special relationship now? A question no-one knows the answer to at this time, but gave members an opportunity to ask their own questions.
In conclusion we were told that although the British policy appears confused it has in fact been quite consistent since 1949.
Charlie is a very knowledgeable speaker who made this topic most interesting for our members and was thanked in the usual manner.
